The Christmas Pine

Julia Donaldson

The book has a nice backstory dating back to World War II. Every year since 1947, the Mayor of Oslo presents the city of London with a tree, as a thank you for their support in the war.  For this reason, I recommend reading the last page of the book first, so you can enjoy the historical context. While it's a nice Christmas read, I would only recommend it for children 0-3 because the rhyming seems a bit lazy and the backstory doesn't come through in the poem, making the book a little too simple for older kids. All in all, I feel like Julia Donaldson’s recent work seems forced and uninspired compared to her first few books.
