Counting on Katherine
HELAINE BECKER
This is a story about a woman named Katherine Johnson. She worked for NASA and helped the first American reach space with her calculations. She calculated the path for Apollo 11 and helped the astronauts of Apollo 13 return to Earth safely. This book explains how she overcame various stereotypes and prejudices as a black woman to make people take her seriously. It is set in an age where segregation based on race still existed. I think this is an excellent book to inspire anyone who loves math, and it’s essential for both boys and girls to read so they do not grow up believing that careers relating to space, physics, and math are only for boys.
