The Do More Club

Here’s another recent release.  This is a story about a Jewish boy named Josh.  He  recently moved to a new neighbourhood where he is one of the only Jewish kids. He hides his religious identity. The story begins with swastikas and nasty anti-semitic comments being painted onto walls across town. Josh’s school starts policies to tackle this issue.  One of these includes forming groups where people would get to know each other. Josh becomes very close to most of his group, but one of the boys, Gavin, bullies Josh after he opens up to them that he is Jewish.  After experiencing this and seeing Marcus, the only black student in his school face racisim, Josh decides to start a club called the Do More Club with the intention of spreading kindness.

I did not like the format of this book because it was written as poetry and it was rather annoying to see spaces where it was unnecessary. However, this story has a beautiful message, that can be applied to most countries and communities. I would make this essential reading for kids who need sensitisation towards being more inclusive, and feel that it is very relevant today.
