This is a series that I did not expect to love but I ended up not being able to put down any of the books. Usually I’m not a fan of what is considered “booktok” but this book had excellently written characters, a good mystery, plot twists that didn’t feel forced and most importantly a display of realistic human emotion.
The story is about a girl named Avery, who suddenly inherits billions from a Texan billionaire she never met. She soon finds herself living in his mansion for a year as a condition to inherit his money, living with his four overachieving grandsons: Nash, Grayson, Jameson and Xander, who had been disinherited but allowed to remain in their house. Avery only finds out why she was chosen by the end of the 2nd book.
Avery soon learns that she has many enemies, most of which she has never met and she teams up with Jameson, Grayson and Xander to find out why she was chosen by a man she had no connection with.
What I really liked about this book is how the subtle references in the beginning tie into even the end of the last book in a way that makes me question if the author planned out the entire story in advance or managed to connect random references to make them an interesting story.
It was really interesting to see the comparison of Avery’s relationship with her sister Libby and the relationships between Hawthorne boys. I also liked seeing the chemistry between all four Hawthornes. I loved the plot twists and character writing in this book as it felt like a mix between a mystery and a coming of age story.
Definitely my favourite read this summer.
