Upside down Magic

Sarah Mlyowski, Lauren Myracle and Emily Jenkins

This is Lila Kapur Gandhi’s review of a series that I think I would have enjoyed when I was her age.

This series talks about the advantages and disadvantages of being slightly different from your gang in any way. The UDM (Upside Down Magic) classroom is a fifth grade class filled with kids who’s magic is slightly unusual. The normal magical abilities are divided into Flyers, Fluxers, Flickers, and Flares. Elliot, Nory’s best friend is a Flare. But instead of heating things, he freezes them. Nory is a Fluxer along with her friend Bax Kapoor. Nory fluxes into mixed up animals such as koats (kitten goats) and drittens (dragon kitten). They work on controlling their magical abilities with their respective tutors and their class teacher, Ms. Starr. One day, a group of kids known by the name of ‘Sparkies’, decides to gang up against the so-called ‘wonkos’. The clan is led by a kid called Lacey who is slowly but surely turning all of her best friends into bullies.  Will the UDM kids be able to protect themselves from the mean gang of kids and face all the challenges their unusual magic throws at them?
