Graphic Novels
White Bird
R.J. PALACIO
This is connected to ‘Wonder’, in the sense that it is the back story of one of the characters’ grandmothers. You do not have to have read ‘Wonder’ to read this book, but I do recommend reading Wonder at age 10 or so. This graphic novel is the story of Julian’s Jewish grandmother, who lived in France during WWII. Julian’s grandmother tells the story of how a disabled boy from her school and his family saved her from the Nazis. This is the story of her unlikely friendship with the boy, who risked everything to save her even though she was ignorant of his existence. This is a sad story, but a beautiful and well-written one.
