Most people would have grown up hearing the name of this book as it is widely known as one of the best pieces of literature. This book lives up to the hype and is about a young girl, Scout and her father Atticus. Scout outshines the other kids in her class and can be considered different from most kids. Her father is representing a black man who is charged with crimes against a white woman.
The most important thing to remember while reading this book is the setting. This book is set in Alabama, which is in the south of America and at the time the book is set in, the 1930s, there was massive racial prejudice in the south, and black people had few rights. This book speaks about this and how Scout and her family, including her brother Jeremy, get bullied and insulted for their father’s position in the case.
This is a good book, and whether it is appropriate is mainly for the parent to decide in this case. But I personally feel that kids above 13 should read this book as the majority of them will already be familiar with some of the more mature themes.
